PREAMBLE

Nowadays free work of art is low rated. Economy, politics, sports, science in our society are accepted on a higher level than art. It is fifth wheel. A pitiful thing. Anyway the actors of trendsetters like to decorate themselfes with products from art. Status symbol art. Old art. Accepted art. Aged art. But the old is not reproducing. The new is nearly not supported and promoted. Sad to say that our actual artists take part in this misery. In traditional disciplines there is not much desire for cooperation. Everyone is working for himself, leading to the situation that there is no lobby fighting for basic conditions. Beside this - and it is more pitty - often craftsmanship is rejected. The outcome is beside exceptions a lot of trash not alimenting man.

Art is not possible to be tought or learned. Creating art is talent. But no talent, no vocation is able to manifest in material if the precondition is missing. There is need for a transmitter: techniques, craftsmanship, creating the form for the genious spark, the content, which will burn up without frame. This would be nobodys benefit, perhaps except the artists.

Therefor let arise manufactures, schools of art, supported by artists who understand craftsmanship as an important form for their creation. Who will give resources to the young who need it to give life to their mental-spiritual in material.

 

MANIFEST OF FREE SCHOOL OF ART

I

Basic and centre of the free school of art (fsa) should be the fusion between individual & collective, art & craftsmanship, teacher & student. The last only at the end.

Each and every specialized class from a special point is working class-overlapping. Smelling into the other subject not being the favorit.

At the end of this process there is the synthesis of the arts in which everybody gives his special and because of hospitation in the other subjects the foreign also will be experianced as the own.

For instance: the performance-class is developing a performance on the basic concept which was developed by all. The sculpturer-class is making sculptures & statuettes which will be part of the room for the performance. The pottery is doing pottery on the living object. The paintors are painting ceilings, walls, grounds. Video- and photographer-class are making a documentation and experimental clips & photos, which will be presented at suitable place. The computer-class will serve for presentation in internet. Printers of serigraph-class are developing the poster for the invitation of the consumers of city & country in cooperation with those making lithographs. The director is standing at the entrance selling tickets. The money goes half to the artists and to the free school.

Free game and experiment are on same level with disziplined work and exercise in concentration and contemplation.

The products will be presented to a local and international audience by exhibitions, open channels, presentations, days of open door and internet.

The doing of the free school will be made transparent to the local population by lectures, hospitation and sometimes by cooperation with interested.

Exercising and learning about human communication of the individuals as well as of the different disciplines. This means understanding of power structure between teachers and students. THE CREATION

 

ORGANIZATION OF FREE SCHOOL OF ART

1.
There will be 6 (7) classes. Every class will be leaded and supported by a qualified teacher. In each class there will be max. 12 students.

2.
The whole education will take 6 semsters (3 years).

3.
Making an application is possible for everybody from here or elsewhere who at least has secondary school and is under the age of 30.

4.
The early bird gets the worm. It means the first 12 applicants will be accepted.

5.
After first semester by all teachers will be decided who is allowed to stay and who has to go. Basis of decision is intuition, creativity & sensibility for material and process. Simple majority is enough.

6.
As there are no objective criterias the decision will be a subjectiv one of the teachers. Therefor it is not possible to go to court with it.

7.
Once a week there is a meeting of the teachers to exchange opinions, to vote and to solve problems.

8.
Once a month there is a meeting of all, inlusive the caretaker, secretary etc.

9.
Each teacher accompanies his students from 1. to last semester.

10.
In the last two semesters there are hospitations in those sections not booked by the students.

11.
The education is finished at the end of 6. semester.

12.
As proof of qualificationt the students get a diploma of the free school.

13.
A 7. semester is facultative for all. Here the artists should get information about functioning of the art-market, where to get financial support, how to find a confident handling of media, curators, galerists and collectors of art.

STATUARY (A)

Knowledge of material of sandstone, marble, granite, wood, plastic etc.

Knowledge of tool: mallet, various hammer and chisel etc.

Procedures of sanding and polishing

How to use tools on material with most effekt

Workflow: from idea to drawing to modell to sculpture. Or: let be influenced by the given material.

Application here means for instance to make a stone-bench, columns, work of restauration, gravestones etc.

Free work means statuettes or sculptures by phantasy or being influenced of the stone or different material

PAINTING (A)

Painting here also includes drawing. To make drawings of the abstract basic forms of triangle, quadrat, circle up to complex connections of these three. Getting a feeling for the meaning of point, line, arrow and space. Learning of benefit and drawback of the twodimension, the combining of for instance strong and soft lines. To understand the effect of dubbling. Then drawings of still lifes, seascape, landscape, portrait, nude study in expressive, cubistic, surreal and real mannor.

Empathie for the model. Therefor learning of techniques for concentration. Leaning to look, to see, to fix. Working from inside to outside.

Applications here are for instance new forms for graphic characters, designs of posters, mural painting inside and outside. Architectual drawings. New combination of colours. Making experiments with emulsions & translucents.

 

POTTERY (A)

Pottery is a classic area of statuettes. Similar to statuary there are taught knowledge of material, tool & various techniques. The material is special as it is first soft like wax and gets another consistence by various processes of burning (ceramics). Techniques of tanslucents will be learned.

The felt handling with material here is most important as the student, like in christian mythology, experiances himself in a very sensual mannor as creator who is forming by his hands over his spirit a half-solid substance.

Applications are: pottering for instance by potter's wheel or setup-technique and making useful things like cups, plates, vases. Unusual also is possible like finding new forms for lamps and doing in in ceramics.

Free work is similar to the section of painting and statuary.

 

SERIGRAPH & LITHOGRAPHY (A)

A section which is developing itself in the twodimensional, similar to drawing and painting. Different is a relative complicated technique at least in serigraph (machine for exposure) but with the benifit of working on pictures already made by different procedures like photos.

Exact looking is necessary and should be exercised. Construction and composition sind principles important to learn. The right colour for the right picture for the special feeling is important.

Also the Litho needs a printing-machine, printing plates and colours. Knwoledge of material, tools and techniques should be learned as well as in the three sections before.

Serigraph is good to be applied in promotion, Lithography is better for free work.

 

FOTOGRAPHY - VIDEO - COMPUTER (A)

These three sections being together in one class but with areal separation are very familar to another because of twodimensional work and highly and complicated technique equipment.

FOTOGRAPHY

The basics about light should be learned and the basic working with it. Different to paintings here is worked directly with quantums of light which are falling out of a machine through a system of lenses to paper being tender for light and by that "painting pictures". It is somewhat similar to the process before. But hided in a black box (camera). The determining here is not the scientic explanation or the technical arrangement of the machines and how they work but the lyrical feeling, the ecstatic sense, the wonderful being astonished how a beam of light is able to perform miracles.

By caching the pictures the problem with it is to be shown (J.L.Godard: every caught picture is a hurting of the soul of the one being fixed). Not only the outer but special the sensible inner should be experianced.

Fotography mainly is an art of the moment, to push the button on the right time, at the right place, in the right second. This is determining. All working after is necessary but secondary. This means teaching of looking, the feeling for image section, moving ore still, learning of different techniques of labor for instance solarization, dubble exposure etc. Cautious and carefull handling of living models when using them (nude study, portrait).

VIDEO

Here also the pictures first will be caught in a machine (electromagnetic in opposit to photography chemical-mechanic). Different to photography however they will be presented moving if they are moving. Added is the audio which should correspond to the pictures. Correspond does not mean harmony. Possible is also complete disharmony. A lot can be discovered. Focus here also is experiment with subject and content.

Like film video is offering not to take scenes from nature (documentation) but to arrange artificial. Focus always is moving.

Taught is: to develop a concept (exposè), so what will I show? Camera work, production, cutting, light, sound, sound-cutting & -mixing, effects.

To teach for the future digital technique is used which is compatible to computer.

Lots of applications are possible: commissional work for offices & companies, promotion, musicclips. The focus however is, like always in free school, in free work and experiment.

COMPUTER

This section startet few years ago and is young in comparison to other fields of art. So there are a lot of possibilities in free work and in applications to create something new.

Recipients of art still have some trouble with accepting computerart as art. So it is necessary for free school. At least here the teacher has to give also philosophical and ethical aspects.

Why: the computer as well as the digital camera and the digital cutting (it is in objective view a process of copy) is calculating the pictures & sounds by only 2 entities, zero & one. A mathematical follow up of numbers gives form & content. That is something complete new. Not pigment, oil, graphit, clay, stone, chemics are the material but abstract symbols of numbers. That is like the scientist which in newer times in nano-technology is manipulation single atoms in his sence. Everything will be possible. Contradictions like objective-subjective, real-irreal, original-copy are delayed. It seems to be reduced to pure information. First a mental working through is necessary (philosophy). Negative and positive aspects of the new will be discussed what gives the chance to transport new views and aspects to light. So here first disputation in pure abstract-theoretic. This as basic the free game and experiment will start again.

Kommunication as a kind of art, internet as an abstract sculpture in timeless room, net of digital experimental clips by computer and sending it worldwide with connections für other projects still unknown for the free school. A lot is possible. But it is the most expensive and difficult section.

 

PERFORMANCES - INSTALLATIONS (B)

In opposite to fotography, video, computer this is a class with the lowest financial level. And here there is nearly no commercial application. It is a pure free section which however gives the highest and deepest possibilities to the artist to get to the bottom of himself. On the other side this section is the most problematic for the potential of the soul of the artist.

PERFORMANCES

Congeneric to theater but no theater. Singularity determines the charakter (no repeat, spontaneous act). Dance, play, pantomime, stagnation and moving, sound, everything is possible to use, a lot is possible to present. Statement-anti-statement, sense-nonsense. As well as harmony-disharmony, might-faint, hatred-love, belief-knowledge.

The essence is not learnable. Like in other classes. Braveness and audacity are needed. Entrance however is possible to teach and techniques of realization. Here it becomes clear, that to mask by technique is not possible at least for the performer. Performance is actual doing. By sensibility for the own feelings and corresponding with the group. Tasting and forming of the "sculpture human being". Working out patterns of reactions concerning the surrounding reality. Exposition of feelings by body not by speaking. Body-work. Dealing with material which support the acted exposition or foil it. Using light and sound etc. and how to use them efficiently. Feelings and sensations should be developed by techniques and the usefullness for actions should be sounded out.

INSTALLATIONS

Also here nearly no application, no commercial possibilities. Different to performance the artist here remains in background. He is not working with his body as an object of art. The recipient usually does not see or hear him. All material can be used for presentation or statement. Material from every day life is used: trash, found things.

Necessary is a greater or smaller room. Aspect of three dimensions. Buildings around or not. Flooded with light or black.

Taught is: what I want to say, to convey, to encurage, to show. Choice of the room is basical for what will appear in this room, collecting of material, how it will go together or how to arrange with not suitables. To develop feelings for dimensionality, understanding of form and content of a certain material concerning the combination with other material and its using concerning the idea and the room in which they occur. How power, weight room, light are working together with a special idea.

 

BULDING OF PUPPETS

Perhaps one more class, a 7th one could be installed which could find creative art-solutions concerning content, form and material. Intercessional for it is the fact that the city of Waltershausen has a long tradition in this section. A teacher will be found easily. Interesting is the combination of ceramics, fabric and colour, perhaps completed by mechanics and electronics. Taught would be the manufacturing of rod- and hand-puppets and puppetshow.
